An HPI check works on a motorhome or campervan because both are DVLA-registered vehicles with a registration number. It queries the same underlying registers most paid checks use: outstanding finance, insurance write-off records, stolen markers and plate changes. HPI is the best known brand in this market and prices accordingly. A touring caravan is different: it has no DVLA registration at all, so an HPI vehicle check does not apply and CRiS is the correct register.

Where the brands genuinely differ

Most consumer checks in the UK, including ours, are built on the same small number of sources: DVLA for the vehicle record, DVSA for MOT history, and Experian for the finance, write-off and theft registers. The differences that actually matter to a buyer are not usually the data itself.

Price	The same underlying registers are resold at prices ranging from under £6 to about £20.
A data guarantee	Some providers include an insurance-backed guarantee, typically up to £30,000, that pays out if the data was wrong and you lose money. This costs the provider a great deal per check and is the main thing a higher price buys. CaravanCheck does not currently include one.
What is free	We show the DVLA record, full MOT history, mileage chart and clocking analysis free for any registration, before you pay anything.
Caravan coverage	No vehicle-check brand covers touring caravans, because there is no DVLA record to check.

Be honest with yourself about the guarantee

If you are buying a £40,000 motorhome and the reassurance of a large data guarantee matters to you, a provider that includes one is a reasonable choice even at three times the price. We would rather say that than pretend the difference is nothing.

Can you HPI check a motorhome?+

Yes. A motorhome or campervan is registered with the DVLA and has a registration number, so a standard vehicle history check applies to it in the same way it applies to a car.

Can you HPI check a touring caravan?+

No. A touring caravan has no DVLA registration, no V5C and no MOT, so there is no registration number to check. Touring caravans are identified by a 17-digit CRiS number instead, and CRiS is the register that holds their theft and finance history.

Is a cheaper check less accurate?+

Not usually on the data itself, because most providers resell the same registers. The common difference is whether an insurance-backed data guarantee is included, and how much of the record you can see before paying.

Does an HPI check show damp or habitation faults?+

No. No history check of any kind inspects the living area. Damp is the most expensive common fault on a used motorhome and it can only be found by physically inspecting the vehicle or paying for a habitation check.
