Insurer requirements, side by side

Every cell comes from the insurer's own page read on 15 September 2026 (links in the sources). "Not stated" means the page does not say, not that there is no rule; ask before you buy.

The four things insurers ask for that DVLA does not

  • A fixed bed of at least 6 ft (1,800 mm). Comfort and Ripe both specify it; DVLA only says "sleeping accommodation".
  • A fixed water tank. Comfort: "Permanent fixed water installation to be connected to a fixed water storage tank or container." Ripe: "A permanently fixed water storage tank or container." DVLA does not mention water at all.
  • Certified gas and electrics. Comfort wants an engineer's report or gas and electrical certificates, produced at claim time; Ripe wants professional installation or sign-off; Just Kampers says insurers often require proof. Shield markets itself on avoiding "expensive engineer reports" by insuring the van as a motorhome from day one. A habitation check certificate is one way to evidence gas and electrical safety: see habitation check near me.
  • Photographs and a floor plan. Comfort's five-photo minimum is the only published count; Just Kampers and Howden say photos may be requested; every insurer will want them at claim time.

Cover while you are still building

Howden's page states the risk plainly: standard van insurance "usually becomes invalid as soon as you start modifying your vehicle". Adrian Flux offers cover throughout the conversion including driving it; Just Kampers says cover is usually possible before completion; Sterling offers fire and theft only during the build; Howden sells a dedicated in-conversion policy with laid-up cover for pauses; Comfort will not take a part-converted private build. Whichever you choose, tell the insurer the value of the base van plus the materials as it rises: Howden lists "flexible valuation" for that reason and Adrian Flux offers agreed value on the finished camper.

The DVLA side

Whether the V5C says motor caravan changes which insurers quote and on what terms, but it is not a legal requirement to use the van as a camper. The criteria, the photos DVLA wants and what happens on refusal are on DVLA campervan conversion reclassification. If DVLA keeps the body type as panel van or van with side windows, Adrian Flux will still insure it as a camper and Comfort may consider it; Ripe's two pages disagree, so ask them directly.

Buying someone else's self-build

The same documents the insurer will ask you for are the ones to ask the seller for: gas and electrical certificates, a recent habitation check, photos of the build, receipts, and the V5C showing the body type. Run the £4.99 campervan history check on the registration for finance, write-off and mileage records, and read checking a motorhome V5C logbook before you pay. The motorhome FAQ covers tax, MOT and licence rules for converted vans.
