What you can genuinely get for nothing
- The DVLA record: make, colour, engine size, fuel, weight, first registration, tax and MOT status. Free on GOV.UK and shown here.
- Every MOT test on record with its advisories and failures. Free on GOV.UK and shown here as a timeline.
- The mileage at every MOT, which is how odometer rollbacks are spotted. We chart this and flag inconsistencies free.
- Whether the vehicle is currently taxed or on a SORN.
You do not need us for the free part
All of the above comes from GOV.UK and you can look it up yourself at no cost. We put it in one place, convert imported readings recorded in kilometres, and handle same-day retests properly so an honest seller is not wrongly flagged for clocking. That convenience is the only thing we add for free.
What nobody gives away
| Check | Free anywhere? | Why not |
|---|---|---|
| Outstanding finance | No | Held on commercially licensed asset registers. |
| Insurance write-off category | No | Held on the insurance industry's own database. |
| Stolen marker | No | Sourced from police data through licensed providers. |
| Previous keepers | No | Not published by the DVLA to the public. |
| Touring caravan history | No | Held only by CRiS, and there is no free route. |
Treat any site offering a free finance check with suspicion
The data costs the provider real money on every single query. A site claiming to give it away free is usually collecting your details, or showing you nothing and asking for payment at the last step.
Is the paid check worth it
On a purchase of this size the honest answer is that it depends what the free data already told you. If the MOT history is clean, the mileage is consistent and the seller checks out, the paid check is buying certainty on finance and write-off status. If the free data already looks wrong, you have your answer and do not need to pay anyone.
