How to read this page

Everything below is an individual owner report or a manufacturer statement, each traced to a source fetched on 15 September 2026. They are not fault rates: nobody publishes reliable fault statistics for Hymer conversions, and DVSA's anonymised MOT data records the make and model from the DVSA vehicle dataset with no separate converter field, so we do not publish an MOT pass rate either. The MOT record belongs to the registered vehicle, base chassis and all: see do motorhomes need an MOT. The £4.99 CaravanCheck report covers what the registers hold on a UK-registered motorhome (stolen, finance, write-off, mileage, plates, keepers); it cannot see damp, which is why this page exists alongside it.

What Hymer owners report, brand-wide

The roof joint on older B-Class and S-Class vans

A Hymer B Classic owner (MotorhomeFun, 23 May 2021) had "a roof leak where the flat metal roof meets the curved fibreglass over-cab"; an S650 owner replied in September 2023 that she had "all sorts of leaking roof this year", and another A-class owner said resealing "wasn't sufficient (and I lathered it)". A 2004 S820 owner (4 November 2023) got a drip from the skylight when level "because the metal frame is heavily corroded". Hymer's PUAL construction has no structural timber to rot, as Motorhome Report's buying guide notes, but water that gets past a joint can run through the hollow panels: a 2017 Dynamic Line owner (27 October 2018) traced garage damp to damaged sealant in the roof gutter, with "the water was running down inside" the panel.

Skylights, fittings and cable entries

Owners repeatedly trace leaks to things screwed through the roof or walls. A 2014 B544 owner (31 October 2021) found "The cycle rack mount points were the culprit and needed stripping, cleaning and re sealing", plus a reversing-camera grommet whose sealant "was dried and cracked" and a roof vent pipe with failed sealant. A 2001 B584 owner had the main and bathroom skylights and the Omni fan leak "a couple of times" (4 November 2023). A 2000 B544 owner found damp in the cupboard where the solar cable entered the roof (21 April 2017).

Rear garage floors and wheel-arch seals

A 2001 B644 had "rotten timer under garage floor at rear corner" (thread title, 11 May 2016); the owner wished Hymer had used "an alloy or steel box section for the framework.. and thicker marine ply". A 2006 B504 leaked "from behind the offside rear wheel floor area" (4 November 2023). On the 2013 to 2014 Exsis, one owner found water in the nearside garage corner and said "Hymer were sending dealers a kit to remedy this as it became a known problem" (27 September 2022); another traced it to the wheel arch, "if it is leaking it is obvious" (4 January 2023); a third had a garage door seal replaced and warned that over-filling the fresh tank lets water into the garage on twisty roads. On the 2017 B 588 DL and B 444 DL two owners found "mould and spongy panels at front of garage in small alcove on the offside" within days of each other (26 October 2018). A three-month-old B-MCI 690 had "water in the passenger footwell" (4 November 2023).

Elektroblock relay, control panels and 12V

A 1999 B544 owner (17 March 2024) lost the panel main-switch light, interior lights and fridge light; the thread identified the EBL 105-4 main-switch latching relay, which "can fail, ie not flip from one state to the other...This problem has come up a couple of times recently". A B544 owner in 2016 had the panel read 13.4 V but only 32 Ah after a battery change and the step would not operate. Motorhome Report's guide warns that the grey window slider catch "is prone to breaking and costs approximately £50 for new parts" and that a replacement boiler "will cost you £2,000+", so see the heating run.

Payload and rear-end sag

Practical Motorhome's 2011 buying advice on the 1986 to 2006 B544 says "Lack of useable payload was also a problem, caused by over-optimistic manufacturer figures" and that pre-1995 entrance and locker doors "sometimes delaminate". Its 2021 B-Class guide adds that Hymer's lowerable motorcycle rack "could overload the rear axle, so check for rear-end sag". Motorhome Report's checklist adds an annual AL-KO axle grease service ("expensive if it fails") and rust checks on non-AL-KO chassis. Licence category follows the plated weight: see can I drive this motorhome on my licence.

By model

B544 (B-Class)

The B544 is the model owners write about most. Reports found: the 1999 Elektroblock relay above; a 2000 B544 with damp at the plinth behind the hob and above the fridge vent, where the wall covering pattern "started to 'bleed'" and the aluminium corner joint strip looked "resealed" after earlier damage (21 April 2017); a 2003 B544 whose only leak was down the skylight winding handle in heavy rain when level, with rot confined to "the chassis, particularly the tow bar extensions" (2016 and 2023); the 2014 B544 cycle-rack, camera grommet and vent pipe leaks; a 2016 B544 Premiumline with "a sizeable amount" of water in the rear boot each side of the door and a bead of water down the wardrobe rear wall (30 October 2021); a B544 whose Truma heater would not light and whose fridge stopped working on gas after the isolator taps were closed (23 August 2025); and the 2016 12 V and step fault. Practical Motorhome (2011 and 2021) flags payload, pre-1995 door delamination, rear-end sag from the bike rack and fragile blue-and-white washroom furniture on 2001 vans. No DVSA recall names the B544.

B584, B594 and B644

B584: the 2001 skylight and fan leaks above. B644: the 2001 rotten garage floor frame above. B594: no owner report was found in any page we could open.

B-Class Dynamic Line, B-MC and B-MCI

The 2017 Dynamic Line garage damp and the three-month-old B-MCI 690 footwell leak are above. DVSA recalls touch these ranges: loose cab side windows on B-MC I and B-SL (May 2019, 31 vans), brake-line connections not tightened on BMC I/T and BML I (September 2019, 82 vans), the fuse-box fire risk on BMC-I/T, BML-I, BML-T, ML-T, Free S and Tramp S (January 2023, 638 vans) and the July 2026 ISOFIX campaign (table below).

ML-T and Exsis

ML-T 570 (2018) and ML-T 780 (2017) owners describe grounding on the long rear overhang, one splitting the foam cladding on the underslung rear water tank (9 December 2019). Exsis: the 2013 to 2014 wheel-arch and garage leaks above, and a 2022 Exsis-i 580 Pure whose tank gauge read empty at 30% full and whose hot tap spat air (7 May 2024). ML-T is in the 2023 fuse-box recall.

S-Class and Tramp

S650 roof leaks and the 2004 S820 corroded skylight frame are above. Tramp: no owner report in a page we could open; Tramp S is in the 2023 fuse-box recall.

Hymer recalls on the DVSA register

DVSA lists HYMER GMBH & CO KG as a make. In the recalls file downloaded on 15 September 2026 there are 12 campaigns under the name; several are Elddis vans built at Consett (see the Elddis page) and two are Eriba caravans. The Hymer-built motorhome campaigns:

What Hymer says: the leak guarantee

Hymer's UK help centre (read 15 September 2026) states: "The tightness guarantee applies to your HYMER motorhome or camper van for 6 years or a maximum of 100,000km. The buyer is obliged to have annual inspections carried out so that the warranty claim remains valid." The annual leak inspection must be done "with a waiting period of +/- 6 months" by an authorised Hymer dealer and service partner. We could not open a general (non-leak) warranty page or any recall or service-bulletin page on hymer.com; the UK country page returned a 404 on the day. Hymer's Trustpilot profile (13 reviews, score 2.3) is mostly about customer-service response times rather than specific faults.

Imported and left-hand-drive Hymers

Many UK Hymers were first registered in Germany. The £4.99 check covers a vehicle from its UK registration onward; earlier history, and any finance or write-off recorded abroad, is not in the UK registers. See buying an imported motorhome for what to ask for.

MOT pass rates: why this page does not give one

Other sites quote pass rates for converter brands. We checked the DVSA anonymised MOT open data documentation on 15 September 2026: the make and model fields are taken from the DVSA vehicle dataset, there is no converter field and no make lookup table, and the guide does not say whether a coachbuilt motorhome appears under the converter or the base vehicle. Until that is settled, any Hymer pass rate is a guess, so we leave it out. What you can check for a specific vehicle is its own MOT history and mileage record, free, by registration: see how to check a motorhome MOT history and which MOT class a motorhome sits in.

Before you buy a Hymer: checklist

  1. On a B-Class or S-Class with a curved overcab, inspect the joint where the flat roof meets the overcab moulding, inside and out, and every skylight frame for corrosion.
  2. Meter the rear garage floor at both back corners and behind the rear wheel arches; on a 2013 to 2014 Exsis ask whether the wheel-arch remedy kit was fitted.
  3. Look at everything bolted through the body: cycle rack mounts, camera, aerial, solar cable entry, roof vent pipes. Ask when they were last resealed.
  4. On a B544, check the plinth behind the hob and the wall above the fridge vent, and the aluminium corner strip on the rear quarter.
  5. Test the Elektroblock: main switch, interior lights, fridge on 12 V and gas, the step, and the panel voltage and amp-hour readings after the engine has been off.
  6. See the heating and boiler run to temperature; a replacement is a four-figure job.
  7. Check the plated weight against the real weight with a bike rack fitted; look for rear-end sag.
  8. On a 2018 to 2023 BMC, BML, ML-T, Free S or Tramp S, get proof the fuse-box recall (RSPV/2023/006) has been done.
  9. Run the £4.99 history check on the UK registration before a deposit; ask for the German registration documents on an import.

Check the vehicle's own record

Whatever the brand, the paperwork side is the same: the vehicle is UK-registered, so a motorhome history check (£4.99) shows stolen, finance, write-off, mileage, plate and keeper records from Experian AutoCheck, DVLA and DVSA. It does not inspect the habitation body, and touring caravans are not covered (they have no registration). More on what the check shows and does not in the motorhome and caravan FAQ.
