First, what you already have

Buying from a dealer: the Consumer Rights Act 2015

Section 22 gives a short-term right to reject faulty goods within "30 days beginning with the first day after" delivery, and section 19(14) says goods that fail to conform "at any time within the period of six months" are treated as not conforming on the day of delivery unless the trader proves otherwise. The Motor Ombudsman's summary: in the first 30 days you can ask for your money back; in the first six months "it's up to the selling dealership or garage to prove that it was of satisfactory quality"; after 30 days you must give the dealer one chance to repair or replace. This applies to a used motorhome bought from a trader, not privately, and it does not depend on any warranty.

Buying newer: the manufacturer's warranty

Practical Motorhome's May 2025 summary matches: habitation warranties "are typically around three years long and often include separate water ingress warranties of about six years, which are usually subject to an annual habitation inspection". The catch on a used purchase is transferability: Swift's ten-year extension dies with the first owner, and every maker voids cover if a service window has been missed, so ask for the service history before you value the remaining warranty at anything.

Aftermarket and dealer-sold warranties compared

What a warranty costs against what it saves

No provider we read publishes a premium. The only price range on page one for this question comes from Motorhome Matt's podcast of 11 December 2023 with MB&G, which put a motorhome warranty at £300 to £700 a year and quoted a fridge at £2,000 to £2,500, a circuit board at £230 and damp repairs at £10,000 to £15,000 or more (all 2023 figures, undated on the page, and MB&G were the guests, so treat them as a seller's examples). The Out and About Live show article of June 2026 uses "£180 for a faulty circuit board" and claims of "£500+". Put against those, a £1,000-per-claim policy covers the board and most of a fridge but not a body repair; only the purchase-price products reach the damp bill.

When it is worth it, and when it is not

  • Worth it: a 4 to 10-year-old coachbuilt bought from a dealer, where the maker's water-ingress cover has expired or will not transfer, and the policy on offer covers seams and floor delamination with a claim limit in the thousands (MB&G Gold, AutoProtect Gold). A resealed panel or a floor section is a four-figure job on the brand pages' owner reports, so a £1,000 cap (MB&G Silver) is the wrong product for that risk.
  • Worth it: a van whose habitation equipment is expensive to replace. Hymer's buying guide puts a replacement boiler at "£2,000+"; a fridge or Alde system is similar. Check the fridge, heater and water-heater parts are on the covered list, not just the engine.
  • Probably not: a van under three years old from the original owner with the maker's warranty intact and transferable, bought from a dealer. The Consumer Rights Act plus the maker's cover already does the job for the first six months and beyond.
  • Probably not: any policy whose water-ingress clause is "first-time repairs to seals only" on a van already past six years, or whose per-claim limit is below the cost of the repair you are worried about. Warrantywise's ingress cover stops at six years; MB&G Silver's at seven.
  • Never assume: a warranty pays for damp found at a habitation check. Owner threads on the Elddis page describe manufacturer claims refused until damage had occurred; aftermarket policies cover "repairs", so a rising reading with no failure may not be a claim either.

Questions to ask before you pay

  1. Is water ingress covered, through which seams, until what age, and does it include replacement panels and floor delamination?
  2. What is the single-claim limit and the total limit, in pounds, on my schedule?
  3. What is the excess per claim, and is there a contribution cap on labour rates?
  4. Which habitation items are named: fridge, heater, water heater, control panel, charger, pump, toilet?
  5. Does an annual habitation service by an AWS member keep the policy valid, and what is the window?
  6. Is the policy underwritten insurance (FCA-regulated, with FSCS protection) or a discretionary dealer guarantee?
  7. Can I cancel and what is refunded if I sell the van?

The check a warranty does not replace

No warranty covers a fault the vehicle already had when you bought it, and none covers outstanding finance, a write-off category or a stolen marker. The £4.99 history check shows those before you sign anything; buying a Cat S or Cat N motorhome explains why a write-off matters to a warranty claim. The converter brand guides quote each maker's warranty terms in full: Auto-Trail, Swift, Bailey, Hymer, Elddis. More in the motorhome FAQ.
